After hearing the option of creating a “mythical creature” for this mask project, my mind immediately went to the posibility of modeling my mask after a pokemon, and what better pokemon than one who essentially has one for a head. Thus I started putting together a board filled with his different interperatations.
The collage was moved to drawing, where ideas for focal points within the pokemon itself and how it may translate to mask form.
To start the 3D exploration, I started with a very technical approach, measuring and cutting with intentions of finishing the whole product at once. It was only when I started becoming more focused on the individual portions of the mask I felt I had a more dynamic and accurate form.
The continued prototyping included the additional constraint of the elimination of tape in the drafts.
Using the CNC machine, the mask’s net was converted into illustrator and cut into bristol. The assembly was then tested before finalization.
To get to the point where one could assemble the mask, instructions and
a printable version of the mask needed to be made. The mask instructions
themself take inspiration from the pokemon francise, adding to the overarching pokemon theme.
